Mirrors or no mirrors? That is the question

I get it, you see a mirror, you’re looking fine af so you check yourself out and then go on with the rest of your workout. But should you be using mirrors for your form? Let’s find out.

Here at Uplift we don’t have a lot of mirrors. Actually, the only one that we have is a selfie mirror for when we are feeling ourselves after our workouts.

So, do we recommend you work out while looking in a mirror? Honestly, no, we don’t for the majority of you.

You’ll often hear people say that they work out with a mirror so that they can look at their form. It’s not wrong to do, it’s just something that I think could be improved.

We believe that people should be able to learn how to lift by listening to their bodies, rather than relying on external stimuli to tell them what is right or wrong.

Especially because a lof ot times people will crank their necks or turn it to “see what’s right” which in turn, puts them into the wrong position. Turning your neck to see if your back is flat during a Romanian Deadlift isn’t doing you any favors.

So, how do you know if your form is correct? Well…if you have a coach (heyyyy) they will always tell you if you’re doing something wrong. If they aren’t telling you, then you’re doing fine.

But if you’re working out on your own, what do you do? Watch a video of the movement that you’re supposed to be doing, film yourself doing it, and watch the video while you’re resting instead of scrolling through social media.

It might seem uncomfortable at first, but the more you do it, the more you’ll realize that it’s totally fine. Pros do it so why can’t you? From there, remember what you learned from the exercise video and make adjustments.

Like, know that your knees should be tracking in line with your toes on the way down from a squat? See your video where they are going in? Okay, try to push them out next time. You’ll start to learn what it feels like to use those muscles correctly.

Mirrors aren’t the worst things in the world, sometimes we will use them for feedback with our clients who already know how it’s supposed to feel for a little bit of alignment.

But I’ll challenge you to give it a go with videoing yourself and see how you feel! Let me know if you love it or hate it 🙂
