Strength training should be a non-negotiable. I know, we normally stay away from black and white statements but this one is important. Strength training is about more than getting strong in the gym.
We have a client, Susan, who is 73 years old who came into the gym a few weeks ago.
Susan has always been a gardener and a woodworker and she wants to host woodworking classes this year.
But she doesn’t have enough strength and stamina right now to stand for a long time. And it’s getting harder to move things around.
So we have started strength training with her. Our goal is to get her back to doing the things that she loves to do. For her to be able to have her woodworking class. For her to be able to go on a trip to Paris and walk around like she has always wanted to do.
This is the real reason for strength training. It goes way beyond just number of weights that you’re using.
It’s about being able to continue to do the things that you love to do as you get older. Because time won’t stop.
At the age of 30, your muscle mass naturally drops around 5-8% per decade (sarcopenia).
At 40 bones start to lose density (osteopenia and osteoporosis).
At 60 your metabolism slows, balance and coordination decline (fall risk increases), and every day tasks get harder.
But it doesn’t have to be so drastic.
Strength training should be a non-negotiable for health.
I’m not saying this to scare you. But if you care about your health and the longevity of the life you love living, you need to be strength training.
If you aren’t yet, that’s okay, it is never too late to start! We can help take you through it.
And if you already are, you’re doing a great job and I’m so proud of you!
