What should you do after your workout?

You showed up, you did the work, you left sweaty and maybe a little tired. Good. But what you do after your workout matters almost as much as the workout itself, and this is the part a lot of people skip.

The whole point of training is to create a stimulus that your body then adapts to. But the adapting part? That happens after you leave the gym. So if you’re not supporting that process, you’re leaving a lot of your results on the table.

Here’s what actually matters.

*Eat something.* Your muscles need protein and carbohydrates after training to start the repair process. You don’t need a perfectly timed shake the second you walk out the door, but eating a real meal with some protein and carbs within a couple hours of your workout is genuinely important. This is not the time to under-eat.

*Drink some water.* You lost fluid during your workout and you need to replace it. Aim for pale yellow pee (you know the drill by now) and keep sipping throughout the rest of your day, not just right after training.

*Stay a little active.* This doesn’t mean doing more exercise. It means don’t go straight from your workout to sitting on the couch for eight hours. Light movement throughout the rest of your day, a short walk, some gentle stretching, just moving around, helps with blood flow and keeps things from getting as stiff and sore.

*Sleep.* This is when the actual magic happens. Your body does the bulk of its muscle repair during sleep, specifically during deep sleep. If you’re training consistently and not sleeping enough, you’re basically doing half the job.

The most important things are the least complicated. Eat, hydrate, move a little, sleep well. That’s the recovery formula. The workout is just the beginning of it.
